Vision and territorial context

In areas with medium to high levels of interaction with wildlife, waste management represents a crucial challenge for public safety, urban decorum, and biodiversity protection. In a region like Abruzzo, where approximately a third of the territory is covered by national and regional parks, the urbanization of protected species and ungulates (such as Marsican brown bears, wild boars, wolves, and foxes) is fueled by the easy availability of food scraps in traditional garbage bins.

The WILD SAFE SAVE BEAR project transforms the organic waste container from a simple passive storage facility into an active and intelligent technological barrier.

A solution designed to reset wildlife behavior, which associates “container = easy food”.

Strategic objectives for institutions and administrations

  • Prevention of Urban Sprawl: Secure the organic and undifferentiated fractions of waste, so that wildlife becomes unaccustomed to frequenting urban centres and historic villages.
  • Wildlife Protection and Public Safety: Drastically reduce the risk of road collisions, direct conflicts with citizens, and dangerous interactions, while safeguarding the safety of animals.
  • Decorum and Hygienic Efficiency: Eliminate waste dispersion on the ground, unpleasant odors and the proliferation of parasites, as well as reduce the costs of continuous remediation.
  • Logistics Optimization (IoT): Digitizing waste sorting through fill level sensors and cloud platforms for real-time monitoring of collection routes.

      System specifications

      High-strength mechanical structure

      • Armored materials. Made of Corten steel or powder-coated galvanized steel, resistant to corrosion, vandalism, and attempted break-ins by large mammals.
      • Pet-safe design. The structure is free of protrusions, exposed hinges, levers, or sharp handles, designed to prevent any physical harm to pets during interaction.
      • Internal capacity. Designed to accommodate 360-liter (or 240-liter upon request) internal wheeled bins for organic waste and unsorted waste.
      • Landscape integration. Finishes adaptable to both urban contexts (e.g., clean lines, matching with planters and street furniture) and naturalistic ones (camouflage and opaque colors).

      Advanced Technology and Sensors

      • Electromechanical Access Control. Authorized opening via NFC/RFID reader for authorized residents, operators, or tourists, or with a button for free-flowing waste in high-traffic areas.
      • Standard IoT Sensors:
        • Ultrasonic/infrared fill level sensor.
        • Internal temperature sensors for fire prevention.
        • Accelerometers for detecting abnormal vibrations or overturning attempts.
      • Battery Life and Connectivity. Powered by a long-lasting lithium battery (approximately 4 years) or a photovoltaic configuration, with 4G/5G, LoRaWAN/NB-IoT communication modules, and integrated GPS geolocation.

      Reliability and field testing

The special container “WILD SAFE” in its Bear Saver version is a project by the company Metal Design Srl of Anagni (FR) Italy

      • Approval tests passed. The system successfully underwent rigorous field testing in collaboration with the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park (PNALM) at the Campoli Appennino wildlife area.

      • The official findings. The tests, conducted in collaboration with the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park, were based on an initial 30-day behavioral study of resident bears (European Brown Bear - Ursus Arctos Arctos) to assess their behavior and behavior patterns toward a mock container that was supplied with fresh food twice a week. After carefully analyzing the video recordings, the final version of the Wild Safe Bear Saver Special Container was designed. It was then subjected to further testing in the same area and using the same methods for 25 consecutive days in June 2025, through the provision of fresh food and direct interaction with European brown bears (of a significantly larger size, weight, and strength than the Marsican brown bear - Ursus Arctos Marsicanus). The tests were concluded with fully positive results, confirming the efficiency and structural robustness of the system, supported by a specific Declaration issued by the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise Park Authority.

      Benefits for local authorities

      • Medium- to long-term sustainability. It encourages the gradual and spontaneous return of wildlife to their natural habitat.
      • Data-driven governance. The centralized dashboard provides timely statistics on waste disposal and flows for targeted territorial planning.
      • Flexible installation. Ideal solutions for city squares, shopping malls, mountain trails, shelters, campsites, and picnic areas within national and regional parks.
